Light The Fuse

Hello Humans! Today, I am very much in a Scientific mindset. Probably because I just wrote thirteen pages for a scientific research paper on the science and math behind Mendelian Genetics. But, I am not totally into all that biology stuff. It's too simple for a complex brain such as mine. I need real mathematics and science, such as Chemistry and Physics. So onto my favorite topic of all: Sub-Atomic Particles and how they act. It's probably my favorite thing to think about, teach about, and talk about. But why though? Well, because it blows people's minds. And it makes everything in the universe make sense. So, welcome my house. The house of madness and insanity. The house of ingenuity and imagination. The house of innovation and discovery. It is the house of Science.

First of all, we need to establish what a Sub-Atomic particle is. You know those pictures you drew in the seventh grade of atoms that showed the electrons, photons, and neutrons? Well, they are totally incorrect, but they did teach you about three Sub-Atomic particles. These three are electrons, photons, and neutrons. But we can go even smaller, to the particles that make up these particles. Quarks, Photons, Higgs Boson, Dark Matter, Tachyons, and many more particles even smaller than the tiny atoms that make up this world. Those are the things that I will be studying for the rest of my life once I finally graduate University and get my Ph. D. Today we will be talking about the most well-known Sub-Atomic particle: Photons. Photons are the light particle. Sub-Atomic particles are really interesting in what they actually are. They are both a particle and a wave at the same time. Many of you might be saying, now Mary, isn't water then considered a wave and a particle, because there are waves in the ocean. No. Water is the medium in which the ocean waves go through, much like how sound waves travel through air, and earthquake waves travel through the Earth's crust and magma. For example, a wave far out at sea is made out of different water molecules than the wave that hits the shore. But Sub-Atomic particles are different. They're a single particle, smaller than an atom. And they are a wave. A small little particle that moves in a sinusoidal fashion. For most of you, this will mean absolutely nothing because you have no scientific background, so I will tell you, THIS IS MIND-BLOWING! A particle is not supposed to act as both a particle and a wave, but be a particle and have a wave pass through it. But seriously. We would not be alive if it weren't for these Sub-Atomic particles and how they move. We would definitely be dead from UV radiation, as our atmosphere would most likely not be able to stop these photons from getting to the Earth's surface. Imagine getting shot by a pure beam of UV rays. You would literally get fried to death. Because of these sinusoids was patterns, the light distributes better, making it not a laser, but a source of life. Our atmosphere can reflect a lot of it, and plants can photosynthesize.

Next, we get to talk about the wave-functions that come from these sinusoidal waves that these particles travel in. There are two major types of wave patterns that come from wave interaction. Constructive interference and Destructive interference. Constructive is when two waves of the same direction and magnitude line up. The result is a wave that is double the magnitude of the original waves. This is why when you are able to hit that high note while singing in the car, it sounds twice as loud. It's because the wave frequency of the sound coming out of your mouth is at the same frequency as the sound coming out of the car speaker. Destructive waves happen when two waves of the same magnitude, but opposite in direction, line up. The result is that the two waves actually cancel out. This is actually how noise reduction headphones work, or at least the really good ones. Now, these wave functions are actually how pretty much everything at the atomic level work. Electrons move in them, Neutrons and Protons also move in wave functions, Photons act like this, and they even make bonding possible. There are these things called "Orbitals." These are the real "shells" that you learned about in your seventh grade science class. Except, instead of the electron being stuck in a single orbit, like our planet, they go everywhere within this orbital. All the orbital is is the area that has the highest probability of containing an electron. These different shaped orbitals cause two different types of bonding that make all life possible. Sigma and Pi bonds. Sigma bonds are single bonds, and Pi bonds are double and triple bonds. Within these bonds there is also bonding and anti-bonding levels. A bond occurs when constructive interference occurs among electrons, and anti-bonding occurs when destructive interference occurs among electrons.

So now we're going to take these wave functions and apply them to our beloved Photons. Next time you look at a light look for "dark spots." it works for ANY light, including the sun. Why do you think we can see "rays" of sunshine? It's not like there are certain areas that have more photons and in other areas there are no photons. What these "rays" actually are are constructive interference and destructive interference among Photons. The bright "rays" being where the constructive interference is, and the darker regions being where the destructive interference is. So, the next time you look at a light, or a ray of sunshine, look for these wave functions. You'll be amazed at what these Sub-Atomic particles can do.

So, now you can probably guess why I don't love my courses right now. Because my brain is used to thinking about very complex and amazing things such as wave-functions, but is forced to think about "science for dummies."

And now to end, here's a song on Light, which also accurately describes me. "You better gain your distance from this howling mind. You know I'm wired to the brim, and I'll explode at a touch of hand. You know a man ain't no good without a fire or flame. If it don't run in your blood, you'd better get off my train, my train. Long living, lotta loving tonight. High rising, high roaming alright. Gonna light the fuse tonight. Racing to the setting sun. Gonna light the fuse tonight. Dream of a life on the run. You'd better rage your war to the devil inside. If you can't find the cure, light the fuse and run and hide, run and hide. Long living, lotta loving tonight. High rising, high roaming alright. Gonna light the fuse tonight, racing to the setting sun. Gonna light the fuse tonight. Dream of a life on the run. Gonna light the fuse tonight, racing to the setting sun. Gonna light the fuse tonight. Dream of a life on the run." -Light the Fuse-Slydigs-

Stay wild, flower child.
